Thank you!
Exactly what I have been looking for. Detailed instructions that I can follow! Great info, and he tells how to fish each one. And autographed by a living legend! Thanks Bob!
An autographed book from a true legend in fishing. I consider myself fortunate because I bought my first flyrod from Bob himself when he had his store here in Pennsylvania. Bob is a true gentleman with extreme patience for those new at this sport. He is truly one of the nicest man I have ever met in my life. If you like flyfishing, you have to pick this book up!
A classic fly tying manual singed by a living legend! I would give it 10 stars if I could!
Clouser’s Flies is an outstanding book on tying all the different Clouser flies he was tying when the hardcover book was published in 2006. In the first chapter, Bob lays out all the materials he uses, along with reasons he uses many of them, along with ways to apply many. On bucktails, he tells you where on the tail to choose the fibers and how to prepare them. In the second chapter, he presents important tying techniques for applying bucktail, saddle hackles, flash materials, and dumbbell/hourglass eyes. He also explains several important aspects of using your tying thread as a tool.
The remaining chapters each cover one of the kinds of Bob’s flies. His instructions are equal to all the best I have seen; even a beginner can easily follow them. To say the instructions are detailed and thorough is an understatement. Most instructions, even for the simpler ties, run about 25 or more steps—with the crippled minnow clocking in at 58 and the crayfish clocking in at 66. Each step is accompanied by an excellent, close-up, full-color photograph. For his darters, he includes the material colors for 15 different darters.
Along with the instructions, Bob presents information on how to fish the patterns, and for many, he discusses the design concepts/principles used in creating them. If I had to suggest an improvement, it would be that it would have been nice to include tying instructions for a pattern that uses three colors of bucktail and two flash materials, along with material colors of more of the patterns included in his other outstanding book, Fly Fishing for Smallmouth in Rivers and Streams, like he does for the darters. But then, their not being included gives you an excellent excuse and reason to buy that excellent book. If you don’t have that book, buy it.
Now that the Clouser’s Flies is in paperback, I suggest you take it to Kinko’s, Office Max, or similar store and have it spiral bound. It will make using it as you tie much easier.
